Canine Taste Tester Squadron: Pea Pods

Pea Pods!

Here is the feedback from the Squadron's taste-testing activity in the late winter of 2008. Our Pea Pods were introduced to Squadron members after significant in-house and Squadron cadre testing. You can read about all of our Squadron members here.

Cooper!

Squadron Airdog First Class

Name: Cooper
Birthday: *classified*
Location: Colrain, MA
Breed: Golden Retriever

Feedback on Peas Pods:

Cooper loved them, as usual she walked around the house with one in her mouth for a little bit to decide whether she liked them or not. Once the decision was made, she inhaled them. Cooper is a 90 lb Golden Retriever, she loves getting treats in the mail, because those get given out before the regular treats. She cleaned up all the crumbs from the Pea Pods and then barked at the box on the counter for the other treat in there. I would say this one qualifies as a success!

Squadron Airdog First Class

Name: Sable
Birthday: 1 June 2000
Location: Milton, MA
Breed: Collie

Feedback on Peas Pods:

The "Pea Pods" arrived today in very good condition. All were intact and hardly any crumbs at the bottom of the box. As soon as we opened the box, we could smell the yummy peanut butter smell, and Sable was very excited to try one! They're a very nice size, not too big, but enough to be a substantial snack for a medium-sized dog like Sable. Interesting shape too. Sable got right down to business tasting them, and it was nice to have a treat that lasted longer than "chomp-gulp-gone!" Sable cleaned up every little crumb and begged for seconds. We also liked the fact that they had healthy green peas in them, a great way to add veggies to a dog's diet (without them even knowing!)

We think you have another hit here!

Squadron Airdog First Class

Name: Candy
Birthday: April 2000
Location: Bellevue, WA
Breed: Golden Retriever

Feedback on Peas Pods:

Candy pricked up her ears immediately when we took these treats out of the box. The first one was eaten within seconds and got 10 tail wags! Yum! There was not a crumb left over, but lots of spittle, so we give these a thumbs up! Candy is a big dog who likes big treats. These are the right size and consistency, not too hard, not too soft. We think she prefers crunchier treats, because it seems like she got a bigger treat if she has to crunch it up. We had one "pea" left over, and while it got crunchier over time, she appears to have enjoyed it as much as her first one.

From a human perspective, even without reading what's in them, these treats look really healthful, with flecks of oats throughout. Their caramel color is appropriate for a dog biscuit (not green!), and I like the ice cream scoop roundness of them. They have almost a brewer's yeast smell that I like for a biscuit. These treats will not fall apart in one's coat pocket while stored away for an end-of-walk snack, a definite benefit. And I only need to bring one!
I did read the ingredients list that came with the treats and thought it sounded very creative but assuredly dogs would like them. The idea to have split peas in a treat is great, because I love 'em myself, so why shouldn't my canine companion?
We would recommend these treats for medium to large sized dogs. The little ones may have to do some wrestling with them!

We think you have a winner here.

Feedback on Peas Pods:

You really outdid yourselves this time! I absolutely loved the Pea Pods. I was overwhelmed at how soft the middle stayed in this treat. There was a great crunch with the outside and I devoured the whole treat once I broke it in half. My parents usually break the muffins in half for me, but they let me to do it myself this time. That was no small task for a shorty like me, but a few nibbles on the outside and the cookie didn’t stand a chance.

When the treats arrived last week, I couldn’t wait to try them. It was worth it once my parents arrived home to give it to me. I ran the treat right to my bed and couldn’t decide between burying the Pea Pod for later or eating it right away. Once the crumbs touched my taste buds, my mind was made up. I tried to breathe while eating the treat faster than any other before it. The only disappointment was waiting until the next day to have a second one. I did spend five minutes licking every crevice of my bed to find extra crumbs. Pea Pods are my new favorite flavor, which I thought would be impossible since I love Peanut Butter Crunch and Wild Blueberry so much. Keep the great flavors coming!

These deserve an excited two paws up. I can’t wait for my parents to buy me more of this flavor.

Breed: Labrador retriever(chocolate)

Feedback on Peas Pods:

Thank you so much for sending out the newest treats for Coco to try. We received them on Friday, and Coco’s human dad, thought they were human treats because they smelled sooo good. But I told him no, Coco’s on the Taste Squadron, so we have to see if she likes them. Well, let me just say, she didn’t just like them, she absolutely loved them, first sniff and all. We broke it in half though she could eat a whole one easily alone, just to see if she’s liked it . I believe she did because she gobbled it up ,and came back for more. It must be the mix of the peas with peanut butter, because all the other treats that we have given her with peanut butter, she usually will eventually eat, but first spits them out, and plays a game, then eventually realizes it tastes good, but this time, she didn’t spit it out even once.. I think we may just need to order some for her.

I was very close again myself, to taking a nibble because they truly do smell wonderful.. The samples have all been gobbled up by Coco, and she’s wanting more… Thank you, and glad we can help!

Feedback on Peas Pods:

I was extremely excited to receive my package of treats today. Right away I ran over to smell the box knowing there was lots of tasty treats inside. I could not wait for my mom to finish reading the note before I got my paws on the little bits of goodness. As she read I did everything I could think of to get a treat and finally it worked! I grabbed the treat and ran to my bed. I licked it a few times to see if I would truly like it and sure enough it was delicious and I ate every bit of it including the crumbs! I finished all of my treats the very same day and would have to say they are some of my favorite. I even start to salivate when my parent go over the where they are kept. I think they are a perfect size too for a big boy like myself.

Thanks for sending, I can't wait till my parents go on line and by my some more!

Breed: English Bulldog

Feedback on Peas Pods:

Hello - Well, right when the package of treats came today, I made my parents open them right away! I definitely liked them alot. The only problem is that they were WAY too big for me. I had to have them cut into quarters in order for me to eat them. I am an English Bulldog and I weight about 50 pds. Although 50 pds, I am on the smaller side. I typically eat medium size treats. If I were to try to eat the entire treat - 1) it would make a mess on my parents floor since I would have to break it up in so many pieces 2) I possibly could choke and 3) I really don't need that much of a treat in one sitting. I know my parents would prefer not to have to cut up treats before serving them to me; although it wasn't that difficult using a large kitchen knife. They smelled great and tasted better. I liked that they were hard on the outside but still soft on the inside - hopefully they stay that way if stored for a little while. Thanks for letting me try!
